A useful Google Ads program begins with a business decision: which customers are you trying to reach, what should they do, and what is that action worth? Campaign settings and creative should follow those answers.
Define a useful conversion
For a retailer, the main outcome may be a completed purchase. For a service business, a qualified inquiry or booked appointment may be more useful than a page visit. Agree on the definition with the person responsible for sales, then test the measurement against actual customer activity.
In Google Ads, primary conversion actions can guide bidding when their goal is used by the campaign; secondary actions usually support observation. Custom goals have different behavior. Review Google’s primary and secondary conversion guidance (opens in a new tab) before changing which actions influence optimization.
Match the campaign to the offer
Start with a specific service, product group, audience, or buying situation. For Search campaigns, consider the intent behind searches and whether the offer answers that intent. Retailers should also review how Shopping ads use product data.
Keep the promise in the ad consistent with the destination. The visitor should quickly understand the offer, whether it fits, what evidence supports it, and how to take the next step. Test calls, forms, and checkout on mobile before paying to send more traffic.
Set a budget the business can evaluate
Define the amount available, what would make the test useful, and when results will be reviewed. Google’s average daily budget is an average, and actual daily spending can vary. Consult Google’s budget and spending-limit overview (opens in a new tab) when setting expectations.
Review the work with sales context
Put spend, conversion volume, cost per useful action, and sales feedback in the same report. Check whether inquiries fit the business and receive timely follow-up. A lower cost per lead is useful only when those leads have value.
Record material changes to targeting, creative, landing pages, and measurement. Allow for the time between an ad interaction and a completed sale when comparing periods. If tracking is broken or the offer is unclear, resolve that issue before interpreting a budget increase as the solution.
