Shopping ads help people evaluate a product before visiting the store. An ad can show its image, price, and retailer, then take the shopper to the product page. A useful starting point is to understand the responsibilities of the store, Merchant Center, and Google Ads.
Product data connects the product to the search
Google uses Merchant Center product information to match Shopping ads with relevant searches. This is different from choosing the positive keywords used in a traditional Search campaign. Shopping ads can be managed through Standard Shopping or Performance Max campaigns. Google’s Shopping ads overview (opens in a new tab) explains the available formats.
Prepare the store and product information
Check a representative set of products from the ad through checkout. The selected variant, price, stock status, delivery information, and return terms should agree with the information submitted to Merchant Center. A complete data source cannot compensate for a confusing or inconsistent buying experience.
Product records need the applicable identifiers, titles, descriptions, links, images, prices, and availability. Requirements vary by product and destination; use Google’s product data specification (opens in a new tab) to validate the actual catalog. Keep that information synchronized as inventory and prices change.
Give the campaign a defined commercial purpose
Choose which products to promote, where they can be sold, and the budget available for testing. Group the work around business differences that matter, such as margin, inventory, or seasonal demand. Review campaign settings and conversion measurement before launch so the reporting reflects the intended market and customer action.
Measure sales alongside cost
Review spend, purchases, conversion value, and return on ad spend alongside product margin, refunds, shipping costs, and stock availability. Revenue divided by ad spend is not a profit calculation. A product with strong click volume may still be a poor use of budget if purchases are scarce or expensive to fulfill.
When results are weak, inspect the sequence: product eligibility, relevant traffic, product-page experience, checkout, and measurement. Record the changes made so later comparisons have context. Better titles or images should be evaluated through results rather than assumed to improve performance.
